Lawrence artist’s work chosen for Kentucky Derby
Lawrence artist Nancy Christy-Moore’s painting, “Race'” has been selected by the Hyatt Regency in Louisville, Ky., as the commemorative poster for the 2003 Kentucky Derby.
It will be printed in an exclusive limited edition of 500 posters.
Guests staying at the hotel for the Kentucky Derby, to be held May 3, will receive the posters, signed by the artist. Many owners, trainers and racing personnel stay at the hotel each Derby season. Each year a different artist is commissioned to paint the poster they are given.
Christy-Moore and her husband, Jack, have lived in Lawrence since 1999. She has taught classes at Johnson County Community College and the Lawrence Arts Center. Her painting “Defenders'” part of the Horse Series that includes “Race,” will be sold Saturday at this year’s Lawrence Art Auction.
Astronomy, art merge in Russell Crotty show
Kansas City, Mo. — California-based artist Russell Crotty combines his passion for astronomy with his art.
The results are intricate drawings of the nighttime sky — complete with star clusters, constellations and planets — which he mounts on spheres. An exhibition of his work, “Russell Crotty: Globe Drawings,” will be on view Friday through July 6 at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, 4420 Warwick Blvd., Kansas City, Mo., where Crotty is an artist in residence.
A free public reception will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the museum. Crotty will speak at 6:30 that evening.
