Widow confronts suspect in slaying

The widow of a slain Lawrence man exchanged words in court Thursday with one of the suspects in her husband’s death.

Michelle Sanders, 27, wife of Quincy M. Sanders, was sitting in the back row of the courtroom as a sheriff’s deputy escorted Tremain V. Scott, 21, from the room.

As Scott passed, Sanders made a comment that was obscured by the noise in the crowded courtroom. She later said in an interview that she held up her hand to display her wedding ring as Scott passed and said, “That was my husband you killed.”

Scott responded — loud enough for bystanders to hear — “So?”

After Scott walked out, Sanders cried, “That’s my husband that they killed. They killed my husband.”

Police found Quincy Sanders, 21, early March 14 lying just inside the front door of a duplex at 2603 Ridge Court. He had 18 gunshot wounds to his head, neck, right shoulder, chest, abdomen and thighs.

Sanders, who lived in the 1500 block of Kentucky Street, apparently had gone to the duplex to confront people there, according to court records.

Three people are charged in the death.

Scott, 21, who has lived recently in both Topeka and Overland Park, and Corey T. Robinson, 23, Topeka, face charges of second-degree murder. Both are in the Douglas County Jail with bond set at $500,000.

Judge Paula Martin on Thursday denied a request by Scott’s attorney, James E. Rumsey, to lower bond to $50,000.

Randy R. Owens, 27, Topeka, is charged with obstruction, attempting to elude a police officer and two counts of aiding a felon. He is free on $7,000 bond.

Martin scheduled a June 20 preliminary hearing for all three suspects. The purpose of the hearing is to determine whether there is probable cause for the state to proceed with the charges against them.

The hearing had been scheduled for Thursday, but the three defense attorneys said they hadn’t received all the police reports from the case.
