Legislation proposes lottery to aid veterans

Topeka — Kansas Lottery players could be playing a new scratch-off game that would benefit military veterans and national guardsmen under a bill introduced Wednesday.

Under the proposal, half of the profits from the game would be used for educational assistance scholarships for the Kansas National Guard.

The other half of the profits would go to the Kansas veterans’ home in Winfield and soldiers’ home in Dodge City.

The legislation setting up the game was introduced by state Sen. Stephen Morris, R-Hugoton, a veteran of two tours during the Vietnam War.

Morris said he introduced the bill after learning about a similar veterans’ benefits lottery game in West Virginia that raised $7 million.

Donations will restore police memorial

Topeka — Law enforcement groups Tuesday kicked off a fund drive to raise $160,000 to restore and improve the Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial.

The memorial to law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty was located on the north side of the Capitol grounds but has been temporarily removed during construction of an underground parking garage.

Tax-deductible contributions can be made to The Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation Fund and mailed to Commerce Bank & Trust, P.O. Box 5049, Topeka 66605.
