Lawrence Police are trying to determine whether a man arrested for spraying graffiti on the Lawrence Arts Center is responsible for similar messages found at other downtown buildings.

“We are investigating the possibility graffiti found at five other locations may be linked,” Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.

Monday afternoon, spray-painted phrases appeared on buildings and sidewalks that included names of two people and references to child rapists.

Clyde E. Reynolds, 36, 1820 Vt., was arrested about 3:30 p.m. Monday when an officer saw a man spraying a message on the north side of the Arts Center, 940 N.H.

Tuesday, Reynolds was charged in Douglas County District Court with one count of criminal damage to property. He is free on his own recognizance and is to appear in court again at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 24 before Judge Paula Martin.

James Truscello, general manager at Teller’s, 746 Mass., said he learned of the graffiti on his building’s south wall in a phone call from an associate who had seen it.

“I don’t think it was meant for us, but someone was obviously very angry,” Truscello said. “We had to go spray over some of it until we can get it all cleaned off. It’s just kind of sad.”

Graffiti also was sprayed on the Allen Press building, 1041 N.H.; and pavement or sidewalks at 17th and Massachusetts streets; Cordley School, 1837 Vt.; and the 800 block of Massachusetts.
