Sheriff’s Office requests new patrol cars

County to consider 3 sedans, including one for canine unit

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office wants to buy three additional patrol cars to meet growing needs, including those of a highly trained dog.

Monday morning, Douglas County commissioners will consider approving the department’s request to add three sedans to its existing fleet.

Each of the new vehicles would meet specific needs, Undersheriff Bill Shepard said:

l One would be used exclusively by the department’s K-9 officer and his dog. The department is working to replace Baloo, a drug-detention dog who retired during the past year. The vehicle would be equipped with a cage and other equipment used for canine-connected operations.

l One would be used for delivering warrants and related work. The sedan would be unmarked, because at times it would be driven by a “process server,” who is not a commissioned officer. Typically, the county has 3,000 warrants outstanding; last year, the department delivered 21,839 process papers.

l One would be assigned for training activities and jail services, such as transporting inmates and materials to and from court, medical offices and other sites.

The department intends to trade in six of its “high-mileage” vehicles and purchase nine new ones. Last year’s replacements each cost $20,280, Shepard said, while each trade-in was worth $5,500.

The department has $179,380 in its budget for vehicle purchases.

Also on the agenda for the meeting, set for 9 a.m. at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.:
