Former Lawrence resident to display oil paintings

Seventeen oil paintings by Maryann Gravino-Askew are being displayed today-Nov. 30 at Wheatfields, 904 Vt. The exhibit features landscapes, portraits, florals and market scenes.

Gravino-Askew, an Overland Park resident who formerly lived in Lawrence, is a member of a Lawrence figure drawing group. Hours of the exhibit are from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Spooky house search to begin for Halloween

The search is on.

The Journal-World is on a quest to find the city’s spookiest house display for Halloween.

If you know of a house that oozes Halloween, send in the owner’s name, address, phone number and why the house should be considered to Steve Rottinghaus, special sections editor, Lawrence Journal-World, 645 N.H., Lawrence, 66044, or e-mail him at srottinghaus@ljworld.com. Home owners can enter their own house in the contest.

Deadline to enter is Oct. 16. Judging will begin Oct. 20.

The results will be published in the Oct. 27 issue of the Journal-World.

Holiday Art Fair deadline approaching

The Lawrence Art Guild’s deadline for accepting entries to the Holiday Art Fair is Oct. 26.

The Holiday Art Fair will be 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Lawrence Arts Center. Artists from Lawrence and the area will be selling their art.

Applications can be picked up at the Lawrence Arts Center or call LAG president Elaine Matt at 841-2065 to have one mailed to you.

‘Haunted Castle’ movie running through February

Kansas City, Mo. “Haunted Castle,” a giant-screen movie designed to frighten teens and adults, is showing at the Extreme Screen Theater in Union Station, 2450 Grand Blvd. The show runs through Feb. 8.

The 40-minute, 3D movie stars Jasper Steverlinck, the lead singer of the Belgium rock band Arid, who plays Johnny, a young musician who is summoned to the haunted castle in accordance with his estranged mother’s final wishes. Upon his arrival, he discovers things are not as they appear. The audience sees the action through Johnny’s eyes and watches as he battles evil to save himself and put his mother’s spirit to rest.

Show times are 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays and 5:30 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $6 for those 13 and older and $5 for seniors. The show is rated PG and not recommended for children under 12.

Coin, Stamp, Card Show set for Oct. 19-20

Lenexa The 34th Annual Coin, Stamp and Card Show will be Oct. 19-20 in the Lenexa Community Center, Pflumm Road and Santa Fe Trail Drive.

Seventy-five dealers will show items from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The event is sponsored by the Johnson County Numismatic Society.

There is no admission charge.
