Valley Falls man injured in riverbank accident

A Valley Falls man was injured when he fell down a rocky Kansas River embankment late Monday morning just east of Lawrence.

A rescue crew from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical strapped the man to a gurney to immobilize him and used a rope to pull him up the bank to safety.

John M. Benoit, 36, was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition late Monday afternoon.

The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. east of Lawrence off East 1500 Road on the south riverbank, where large pieces of concrete are being placed as part of an erosion control project.

Firefighters said Benoit, who works for Bowen Ditching, Lawrence, was retrieving something that had fallen from the back of his dump truck when he lost his balance and fell about 15 feet down the embankment.
