Visiting artists to perform simultaneous recitals

Two recitals by visiting artists will run simultaneously at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Kansas University.

Pianist Robert Weirich, who has held the Jack Strandberg Missouri Endowed Chair in Piano at the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music since 1998, will perform at Swarthout Recital Hall. The other recital, in Room 130 Murphy Hall, will feature David Gier on trombone, David Greenhoe on trumpet and Shari Rhoads on piano. All three come from the University of Iowa.

Admission to both recitals is free and open to the public.

Jazz museum offers poetry series for teens

Kansas City, Mo. ” “One Mic, Two Rhythms and Poetic Pieces, the American Jazz Museum’s free open mic jazz poetry series for teens, will have its next session at 2 p.m. Saturday in the museum’s Blue Room.

The program, called “The Bass-ics,” will offer tools and techniques for creative writing. Poet Barrie Wandischie Hamilton, aka “Rapture,” will facilitate the session. Hamilton is a poetry facilitator with the Urban Transcendence Poetry Project for the Kansas City, Kansas School District.

Jazz poetry sessions are offered every third Saturday of the month through March 2003. The series will culminate with a midnight Grand Slam event in April.

‘Dragon Tales’ play hits Kansas City stage

Kansas City, Mo. ” Dragon Tales Live’s “Journey to Crystal Cave” will be presented Thursday-Nov. 17 at Municipal Auditorium, 301 W. 13th.

The show, based on the PBS television show “Dragon Tales,” tells the story of 6-year-old Emmy, her 4-year-old brother Max and their dragon friends, Ord, Cassie, Zak and Wheezie. The characters must restore the power to the magical dragon scale, which allows them to travel to and from Dragon Land.

Show times are 7 p.m. Thursday; 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday; 10:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Saturday; and 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Nov. 17. Tickets are $14 and $18.
