Baldwin cast stages Broadway revue

? For the third year in a row, Baldwin City Theatre regulars will break from their child-oriented summer programming to stage a flashier show.

A 12-member cast will sing and dance its way through “Cabaret, the Next Level” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Nov. 10 at The Lodge.

“We get to sing adult music,” said cast member Jan Cooper, co-founder of BC Productions, which is producing the play. “It’s not triple-x or anything like that.”

“Cabaret” is a compilation of show tunes from the likes of “Phantom of the Opera,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Cinderella,” “Les Miserables,” “The Full Monty” and others. A few tunes from movies fill out the bill.

Although this is the third year the group will stage the revue, Cooper said the content was a tad darker this time around.

“It goes into the psyche of the performer just a little bit more,” she said. “It kind of touches some deeper emotions.”

Cast members include Heather Ballinger, Mary Baker, Mike Boring, Brenda Cabrera, Carol Cooper, Jan Cooper, Will Cooper, Shawn Evans, Ed Lammers, Ken Frank, Tom Sigvaldson and Terry Thoelke.

Jan Cooper and fellow BC Productions co-founder Mary Baker developed the Cabaret series concept three years ago. As in years past, cast members did their first read-through in August and, since then, have been responsible for learning their own music. Group rehearsals didn’t begin until a few weeks ago.

“There are some times that it’s a little hairy, but it seems to fall together well,” Cooper said. “It’s truly a group effort.”

Proceeds will benefit the Baldwin City Theatre.

The Broadway revue will be staged by BC Productions at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Nov. 10 at the Lodge, 504 Ames, Baldwin. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling (785) 594-3900.

Cooper’s hoping for a good crowd.

“It’s a nice way to relax,” she said. “You don’t have to know us to appreciate local talent and to appreciate the many types of music that we’ll be doing.”
