Photography contest winners announced

The Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau has announced the winners of its National Tourism Week photography contest.

The contest was open to youth, amateur and professional photographers, who were directed to capture the most enticing elements of Lawrence on film.

Winners and the categories that they won are Andy Stevens, “The Great Outdoors, From Ashes to Immortality” and “The People of Lawrence”; Shakura Jackson, “From Ashes to Immortality” and “Lawrence by Night”; Lee Miller, “Lawrence: City of the Arts”; Ross Knowlton, “Lawrence: City of the Arts”; Brynn Edmonds Burns, “The Great Outdoors”; and Kathryn Conrad, “Lawrence: City of the Arts.”

The grand prize winner was Anna Dean, who submitted a photograph taken at the Haskell Indian Nations University’s spring powwow.

Folk festival slated in Cottonwood Falls

Cottonwood Falls The Fourth Annual Flint Hills FolklIfe Festival will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 2 at the Chase County Courthouse.

Booths include basket making, soap making, blacksmithing, spinning, carving, pottery making, rope making, natural herbs, weaving, quilting and handmade furniture. The festival also will include a Civil War-era encampment, food vendors and a Tallgrass Pickers bluegrass jam at 7 p.m. Saturday.

There is no admission charge.

Free State yearbook receives recognition

The Free State High School yearbook, The Talon, has been named to Walsworth Publishing Company’s Gallery of Excellence.

The books in the gallery represent 1 percent of all yearbooks published by Walsworth. They are used by the company’s sales staff as examples, are loaned to schools across the country as idea generators, and displayed at yearbook conventions.
