Car chase ends with arrest

A 19-year-old man was arrested by police Sunday night after he allegedly tried to elude them in an allegedly stolen car, police said.

The 1990 Buick LeSabre was taken from a parking lot in the 300 block of East Seventh Street between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., the owner told police.

At about 10 p.m. a patrol officer saw the car parked at a boat ramp along the Kansas River near Eighth and Oak streets, police reports said.

The suspect drove the car away at excessive speeds, police said.

A short distance north of Lawrence the driver jumped from the slowed but still-moving car and attempted to flee on foot. He was captured by officers. The car rolled off the highway and came to a stop, police said.

The suspect, a Lawrence man, was booked into the Douglas County Jail but was released Monday while charges are pending.

Accident sends 4 to hospital

A two-vehicle accident Sunday night northeast of Lawrence caused a fire and sent four people to the hospital by ambulance, Douglas County Sheriff’s officers said.

All the injured were treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokesman said.

At about 6:20 p.m., a 1991 Isuzu Trooper driven by Loyd Alumbaugh, 64, Lawrence, was eastbound on U.S. Highways 24-40 and was about to make a turn north onto East 1500 Road, a sheriff’s report said. A passenger in the Isuzu was identified as Sandy Sharon, 39, Lawrence.

The Isuzu was struck by another eastbound vehicle, a 2002 Honda Accord driven by Lawrence Smith, 81, Tonganoxie. A passenger was identified as Eula Smith, 71, Tonganoxie.

The collision caused a fire, but no other information was available.

Grass fire destroys hay bales

A grass fire Saturday destroyed 72 hay bales on a farm near Eudora, Douglas County Sheriff’s officers said.

The hay, valued at a total of $2,160, was in a field in the 1900 section of North 1000 Road on a farm owned by Vernon Hadl. The hay, however, belonged to Roger Johnson, 1705 N. 1399 Road, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The fire actually started on a nearby field and spread to the hay bales. Firefighters from Eudora, Palmyra and Wakarusa townships fought the blaze from about 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
