Cold can’t stop Shamrock Shuffle

Participants run 5K to benefit Infant-Toddler Coordinating Council

Not even blustery conditions and a temperature of 20 degrees could keep runners, joggers and walkers from participating in the 13th annual Shamrock Shuffle Saturday morning.

About 200 people participated in the 5-kilometer event on an out-and-back course on the river levee between Johnny’s Tavern, 401 N. Second St., and the Interstate Highway 70 overpass.

Runners in the 13th annual Shamrock Shuffle were greeted by freezing temperatures but still managed to make the morning run along the levee. Leading the pack is No. 147, Pete Haack, of Lawrence. However, it was Brian Jensen, Lawrence, who was the men's overall winner Saturday morning.

For Linda Wheatley, Lawrence, it was her first competitive 5K run.

She enjoyed the run, but not the cold conditions.

“I hated it,” she said of the weather. “But it motivated me to finish.”

Joining Wheatley was her friend, Rosemary Thorne, Topeka, who ran the first of four or six 5Ks she’ll do this year.

“I thought it was windy, but the temperature was good,” Thorne said.

After the run, participants were treated to an Irish breakfast at Johnny’s, complete with corned-beef hash, fruit salad, doughnuts and bagels.

The proceeds from the event go to Infant-Toddler Coordinating Council, which helps children younger than 3 with developmental problems, said Jim McDonald of McDonald Chiropractic, one of the event sponsors.

Phil Bradley, chairman of the St. Patrick’s Day committee, thanked all the participants for showing up in the cold.

“I’m just so grateful and impressed by the loyalty and dedication of the runners to show up, at what best could be called challenging conditions, and support the charity,” he said.

Brian Jensen, 25, Lawrence, was the men’s overall winner with a time of 16:03. Junior Pullins, 26, Lawrence was second with 16:38, and D.J. Hilding, 19, Lawrence, was third with 17:01.

Lezlee Jones, 31, Topeka, was the women’s winner with 23:22. Susan Stark, 41, Topeka was second with 23:43, and Ann Weber, 38, Lawrence was third with 24:31.
