Music camp participant reports inappropriate touch

A 15-year-old girl attending a music camp at Kansas University reported she had been “inappropriately touched” by a 17-year-old boy, KU Public Safety officers said.

The incident occurred between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday in Murphy Hall, KU Lt. Schuyler Bailey said Wednesday. Both victim and suspect are attending a music camp for high school students at KU.

The girl reported the incident to camp officials several hours after it allegedly occurred and then KU officers were called, Bailey said.

An investigation is continuing and no arrest has been made, Bailey said.

Ball-bat attack reported

A Lawrence man told police that early Sunday he was struck in the head with a baseball bat during a fight in the 1200 block of Georgia Court.

The 23-year-old victim said four men ganged up on him and kicked and punched him, according to a Lawrence Police report. He was driven by private vehicle about 1:40 a.m. to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The attack stemmed from an earlier fight at a Lawrence bar, police said.

Police are investigating, but no arrests have been made.

Decapitated body found in Wichita apartment

Wichita A maintenance worker who was trying to put out a fire in a vacant apartment unit discovered the decapitated body of a woman believed to be in her 30s, authorities said.

The identity of the victim was not immediately released, but she is believed to live alone in an apartment near where her body was found Tuesday. Police would not say whether the victim’s head was found with the body. The woman was last seen about 9 p.m. Monday, police Lt. Ken Landwehr said.

The maintenance worker went to the vacant ground-floor unit in the upscale complex on Tuesday after a neighbor reported smelling smoke from the fire that had been set with a flammable liquid.

Police, fire and EMS units were sent to the apartment at 9:11 a.m. after the discovery of the body. Carpet had been burned, but damage to the apartment was minimal.

No one was arrested and no weapon was found Tuesday despite a massive search that involved a helicopter, tracking dogs, divers and officers on horseback, Landwehr said.

Kansas Republicans expect Cheney at Wichita event

Topeka The state Republican Party says Vice President Dick Cheney on Monday will be in Wichita for a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser.

His appearance at an 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the Hyatt Regency is designed to raise money for GOP races in the Nov. 5 general election, Kari Austin, executive director of the Kansas Republican Party, told The Topeka Capital-Journal on Wednesday.

Cheney’s media relations office in Washington won’t confirm the vice president’s schedule until two days before a planned event because of security concerns.

But Austin said at least 3,000 invitations have been sent. Some went to people who haven’t made donations to the party for some time, in hopes that Cheney’s visit will coax money out of them, she said.

“We need to do well to help out our victory plan this fall,” Austin said.
