Dutch remix could revive Elvis

London Elvis Presley may have a hit on his hands.

That’s right, Presley is expected to score a posthumous hit with a Dutch remix of 1968’s “A Little Less Conversation.”

Dutch musician Tom Holkenburg, known in Europe as the disc jockey of the techno-group Junkie XL, remixed the song for a Nike television commercial. Although a contemporary remix, “Elvis vs. JXL a Little Less Conversation” leaves Presley’s distinctive vocals intact.

The single, which was released throughout Europe last week, sold more than 67,000 copies in Britain the first day.

A top-selling hit would return Presley to the Guinness Book of Records as the artist with the most No. 1 recordings in England, breaking the long-running tie with the Beatles with 17 apiece.

Skater graduates from junior high

Greenwich, Conn. As an eighth-grader, Dorothy Hamill’s days began at 4:30 a.m. when she and her mother would drive to New York for skating practice.

The hectic schedule took its toll on her school work, and the future Olympic champion found herself in front of the guidance counselor, she told students Friday at her old school, Eastern Middle.

“You know, you may break your neck someday and you may need your education,” Hamill remembered the counselor telling her.

She eventually decided to live in New York City during the week so she could be closer to her training and receive tutoring. On Friday, school officials gave her an honorary junior high graduation certificate.

“We weren’t as sympathetic as we could have been,” said Principal Benjamin Davenport.

Graham to preach in Cincinatti

Cincinatti The Rev. Billy Graham’s first visit to Cincinnati in 25 years could mark one of his final major appearances.

Graham, 83, will speak again in Dallas in October but has not scheduled another major appearance after that, spokesmen said. The evangelist has suffered from health problems including Parkinson’s disease for several years.

Officials of the Billy Graham Mission said he plans to give a sermon each night from June 27 to 30 in Paul Brown Stadium, home of the Cincinnati Bengals.

UCLA honors Kirk Douglas

Los Angeles You can now call Kirk Douglas “Spartacus the Scholar.”

The 85-year-old actor received top honors Friday from the University of California, Los Angeles, during the school’s graduation ceremony for theater, film and television students.

The UCLA Medal, presented to people for cultural, political and humanitarian achievements, is the highest honor the school can award. Previous recipients include former Presidents Carter and Clinton, former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres, and actors Laurence Olivier and Carol Burnett.
