KU alum’s composition being played in Bath

A composition by a Kansas University alumnus is being performed today at the Guildhall in Bath, England.

The guitar piece, titled “Three Dance Miniatures,” was written by Alastair King, who studied music at Bath Spa University College and then completed postgraduate studies at Birmingham University and KU.

Last year, King was the only entrant to reach the final of the worldwide Masterprize 2001 for composers. His work, titled “Hit the Ground (Running, Running, Running),” was recorded by the BBC Philharmonic and broadcast worldwide. He also has worked on such films as “Spy Game, “Shrek” and “Chicken Run,” as well as BBC television series.

KU Holiday Vespers tickets on sale

Tickets for this year’s Holiday Vespers are already on sale.

The concert will be at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Lied Center.

Vespers features a variety of holiday vocal and instrumental music.

Tickets are $12.50 and $10 and are available at the Lied Center Box Office, 832-ARTS; Murphy Hall Box Office, 864-3982; and the Student Union Activities Box Office, 864-SHOW.

Artists needed for street painting

Kansas City, Mo. Street painting will return to Kansas City this fall at the fifth annual La Strada dell’Arte festival.

The festival, which will feature more than 250 artists, will be Oct. 5-6 at Union Station, Pershing Road and Main Street.

Each artist receives pastels and creates masterpieces on the streets and sidewalks.

Craig Thomas, a street painter from Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Cory Wright, a mural artist from Kansas City, Mo., will be the featured artists.

Entries being sought for Grand Nude Show

Kansas City, Mo. Grand Nude Show 2002, a juried exhibition of nude figures, is looking for entries.

The exhibit is open to artists in the Greater Kansas City area who are over the age of 18 and able to hand-deliver work to the show in the Hobbs Building, 1427 W. Ninth St.

Entries should be submitted as 35mm slides. Entry fee is $25 per five entries. Entries are due Sept. 6.

Show dates are from 11 .m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 12-19, with a reception from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 11.

CD to celebrate Langston Hughes

Naxos Records is releasing “Dreamer: A Portrait of Langston Hughes” in September in celebration of the Langston Hughes centennial. Darryl Taylor, tenor, and William Warfield, narrator, will perform songs by various composers that are based on Hughes’ poetry.
