Community theater offers adult, children’s classes

Lawrence Community Theatre is offering classes for adults and children this fall.

The adult classes include improvisation, 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Tuesday-Oct. 1, instructor Uta Walter, cost $45; beginning acting, 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Sept. 9-Oct. 14, instructor Jeanne Chinn, $45; intermediate acting, 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 11-Oct. 17, instructor Laurie VanderPol, $45; and scene painting at home using faux finishes, 9 a.m.-noon Sept. 28 and Oct. 5, instructor Mary Ann Saunders; $30 for one session and $50 for two sessions.

The children’s classes are “How About This ,” an improv class for grades 1-5, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 11, $25, and “Mystery and Masquerade,” mystery solving and mask making for grades 1-5, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 17-18, $45.

Mini-grant helps pay for Civil War events

Watkins Community Museum of History and the Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau were awarded a Kansas Humanities Council Mini-Grant for $3,230 for programming and promotion of this year’s Civil War on the Western Frontier events.

Judy Sweets, collection manager at Watkins Museum, and Deb White, manager of the Lawrence Visitor Center, wrote the grant.

Starlight books Christian musicians

Kansas City, Mo. Rock the Light, a contemporary Christian music festival, will be Saturday at Starlight Theatre, 6601 Swope Parkway. The festival begins at noon.

Fourteen Christian bands, including Third Day, tobyMac, True Vibe, Superchic(k), By the Tree, Beanbag and Alli Rogers will perform.
