Baker graduate writes book for freshmen

Baker University alumnus Larry Rochelle has published a new book titled “Prof Rap.” The book, which is at times irreverent, gives advice for entering college freshmen.

Rochelle, an English professor at Johnson County Community College, also is the author of “Tracetracks, “Dance with the Pony” and “Death & Devotion,” all available through Bowker Books in Print.

KU alumnus wins award, scholarship

Doug Thompson, a 2001 Kansas University graduate, competed in the International Modeling and Talent Assn.’s convention July 20-27 in New York City.

Thompson was named 2002 Actor of the Year. He received $1,000 in cash and a $2,500 Adam Hill Scholarship to Piero Dusa Acting Conservatory in Santa Monica, Calif. More than 2,500 actors and models competed.

Thompson, who majored in journalism, became interested in acting while performing in three Rock Chalk Revues at the Lied Center. Since graduating from KU, he has performed in Kansas City-area productions and taken acting lessons.

Thompson comes from a family with strong KU ties. His parents, Kaye and Walt Thompson, Overland Park, graduated from KU in ’72 and ’70 respectively. His twin brother, Brett, graduated in 2001 and is serving as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy. His sister, Olivia Marsh, graduated in 1977 and is an assistant editor at the American Academy of Family Physicians in Overland Park.

Andy Griggs, Ricochet to perform at festival

Independence, Mo. The 30th Annual Santa-Cali-Gon Days Festival will be Friday-Sept. 2 in Independence Square.

The event includes a juried arts and crafts show, carnival rides and musical acts. This year’s performers include Andy Griggs, Joe Nichols, Ricochet, Johnny Lee, Rodney Atkins and James Monroe.

Hours are from noon to 11 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday-Sept. 1 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 2.

White Cloud gears up for flea market

White Cloud The 66th Semi-annual White Cloud Flea Market will be Saturday-Sept. 1 at various sites in White Cloud.

The market features primitives, antiques Americana and shabby chic. Food will be available from street vendors and various clubs.

Admission is free, but the American Legion ball teams parks cars for $2.

St. Joseph orchestra filling vacancies

St. Joseph, Mo. The St. Joseph Orchestra is having auditions to fill openings in the orchestra.

Needed are first violin, second violin, horn-second chair, bassoon, trumpet-third chair, trombone-second chair and tuba.
