Arrest made for fake IDs

Alcoholic Beverage Control agents on Thursday announced the first arrest in a Lawrence fake identification ring.

A 19-year-old Lawrence man was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of manufacturing and selling false IDs and possessing a fake driver’s license after agents searched his home Tuesday.

The arrest was part of an ongoing ABC investigation into manufacture and sale of false identification in Lawrence.

“There will likely be more charges against him and other people,” Lisa Kaspar, director of communications for the Kansas Department of Revenue, said Thursday.

ABC director Robert Longino said a tip led agents to the suspect, who is free on $1,250 bond. Longino said he expected more arrests in a few weeks.

“In most situations, there’s not just one person doing it,” he said. “‘Ring’ means there potentially could be dozens or hundreds of people that got IDs from this person.”

Longino said he couldn’t comment on evidence that agents seized from the suspect’s house or how much money he may have been making in the alleged operation.

“Based on our knowledge of the Lawrence market, they go for anywhere from $50 to $200,” he said.

The suspect who was arrested was listed as a freshman at Kansas University in the 2001-2002 KU directory, but his status as a student this year could not be verified.
