Magazine that targets ‘Homes of Color’ makes debut

? Eleven months after Corriece Perkins Gwynn first considered starting a shelter magazine for affluent African-Americans, “Homes of Color” is set to launch.

“We know there is a need. Mainstream media overlook African-American architects, artists, interior designers, landscapers, decorators, developers and real estate agents,” said Gwynn, the publisher and editor-in-chief, who is financing the magazine with her husband, John, an attorney. “There are a lot of quality individuals out there doing quality work.”

Gwynn said there is “no difference” in decorating styles among various racial groups. But when homes of African-Americans appear in print, they often feature “stark white walls and Afro-centric accessories,” said arts educator Penny Shaw, Gwynn’s sister and a member of the magazine’s advisory board. “Our population here knows our origins are African, but there are a whole host of people who are Christian who would never put a mask on a wall. You have another group of people call them nouveau riche or black bourgeoise who are successful and are buying homes and property. But the things they see in the magazines don’t excite them.”

Today’s 24-page debut issue will include features about Washington architect Charles Cassell, North Potomac, Md., art dealer Tina Rahman and Frederick, Md., interior decorator Mercie Joubert.
