Civil War garments to be shown at Watkins

Authentic Civl War-era garments and accessories will be shown by Maryanne Shutler from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass.

Shutler will display the handmade flag her great-grandmother created while she waited for her future husband to return from serving in the Civil War. She will show her great-grandmother’s dresses, including mourning dresses and mourning veil, petticoat, hats, purses, shoes and tea apron and cap.

Shutler will discuss a woman’s role during the 1860s and tell how the Civil War helped liberate women.

The session is free and open to the public. However, a donation is suggested to the museum.

Deadline for City Scene entries is nearing

The deadline to submit club entries for the Journal-World’s annual City Scene is Aug. 31.

State fair offers mix of music, tractors, races

Hutchinson The Kansas State Fair has lined up a roster of Main Stage acts that range from rock and country bands to motocross.

New executive director named at TPAC

Topeka Rob Seitz has been appointed executive director of the Topeka Performing Arts Center, 214 S.E. Eighth.

Seitz most recently was general manager for SMG-Evansville in Evansville, Ind., where he was responsible for the operation of Roberts Stadium, Evansville Auditorium and Convention Centre, Victory Theatre and Mesker Amphitheatre.

He also worked as director of the Ferrell Special Events Center at Baylor University in Waco, Tex., and general manager of the Jefferson County Civic Arena in Steubenville, Ohio.

He has a bachelor’s degree in business logistics from Pennsylvania State University; and master’s degrees in sports administration from Kent State University and in marketing from Baylor University.
