KU professor edits book on Kansas poet
A Kansas University professor has edited a new collection of poems by Frank Marshall Davis, a native Kansan recognized by journalism historians for his work in Chicago, Atlanta and Honolulu.
John Edgar Tidwell, associate professor of English, edited “Black Moods: Collected Poems.” It is the second book on Davis that Tidwell has edited.
Davis, who was born in 1905 in Arkansas City, made the twice-weekly Atlanta World into a daily newspaper within two years of assuming the paper’s managing editorship in 1931. Under Davis’ leadership, the Atlanta World became the first successful black daily newspaper. In 1935, Davis became managing editor of the Associated Negro Press in Chicago and later was executive editor for ANP, a news service for black newspapers.
The topics of his columns ranged from labor issues, racism and the history of blues and jazz.
