Tickets go on sale for state fair concerts

Hutchinson The Kansas State Fair will begin selling tickets Saturday for its country and classic rock lineup.

The lineup includes Journey, Sept. 6; Travis Tritt, Sept. 7; Charlie Daniels Band, Sept. 11; and Charley Pride, Sept. 15.

Two-man show makes debut tonight

Card Table Theatre’s newest comedy troupe will make its debut today.

Under a Minute Men will present “Literary Canon Fodder,” a tongue-in-cheek debacle for the literature, at 8 p.m. today, May 3, May 10 and May 11 in the Dance Academy, 1117 Mass. It also will be presented at 8 p.m. May 4 in the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

The two-man show, featuring Jerry Mitchell and Will Averill, will attempt to satirize the complete span of Western literature, with each work done in under a minute. The show is directed by Jeremy Auman and written by Averill.

Card Table Theatre is a nonprofit partnership that was formed in the spring of 1998 and produces the works of local authors as well as published and established plays.

Admission is $5 at the door.

Lawrence choir to join dancers for performance

The Lawrence Civic Choir will present “A Celebration of Psalm and Song” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Central Junior high School, 14th and Massachusetts streets.

The highlight of the program will be “Chichester Psalms,” which features the choir and a group of Kansas University dancers. The work was choreographed by Muriel Cohan. Dancers include Kristi Allen, Beau Hancock, Alison Mize, Kathleen O’Connor, Brandi Scallorn, Jessica Smith, Michelle Whiteley, Lillian Wu and Patrick Suzeau.

The program also includes works based on the text from Psalms; songs of love and romance; a setting of an American hymn; and a song that celebrates the patriotism of homeland.

Tickets at the door are $8 for the general public, $6 for senior citizens and $4 for children under 12.

Waterville to present annual Victorian Days

Waterville The 12th annual Victorian Days will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in downtown Waterville.

Highlights include an English tea at the historic Weaver Hotel; ragtime band concerts at the Opera House; a frontier camp and re-enactments; a display of Victorian funeral memorabilia; and a tour of Victorian homes.

Theater to give classic tale a twist

The Theatre for Young America is presenting a musical version of the classic tale “Pinocchio.” This Italian Commedia Dell’ arte dramatic version by Johnny Simons has its own original musical score and retains the style and flavor of the Italian tale.

In the play, a band of strolling actors are traveling around Italy in a show wagon presenting Pinocchio. In the play within a play, the stock commedia characters take on various roles in the story.

The play is scheduled to run through May 17 at various times. Tickets are $6.50 and group rates are available. For more information, call (913) 831-2131.

Lawrence artists named to exhibition

Hays The Hays Arts Council announces that several Lawrence artists recently were accepted into the 33rd annual Juried Smoky Hill Art Exhibition in Hays. They are: Hobart Jackson, Shakura Jackson, Marvin Kitten, Stephanie Kitten and Yoonmi Nam.

An opening reception will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Hays Arts Gallery, 112 E. 11th St. The exhibition will be on display through May 24.

Poetry reading set at library

Two Lawrence poets will read their works at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

Serina Allison Hearn will read from her new book of poems, “Dreaming the Bronze Girl.” Gary Lechliter will read from his book of poems, “Under the Fool Moon.”

The reading is free and open to the public.

Opening reception set for KU professor

Kansas City, Mo. Robert Price, associate professor in Kansas University’s Department of Art, is exhibiting a collection of paintings at the Sherry Leedy Gallery of Contemporary Art, 2004 Baltimore Ave. An opening reception will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the gallery.

Entitled “Sky Mudra,” the work deals with what Price calls “unconditioned space,” or images created by a mind that is free of preconceptions. His works will be on display through June 15.

Contralto reschedules visit to area college

Overland Park Polish contralto Ewa Podles will perform at 8 p.m. today in the Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College, 12345 College Blvd.

Podles was scheduled to perform in October but canceled because of illness.

The program will include Rossini’s cantata “Giovanna d’Arco,” Brahm’s “Zigeunerlieder” and other works by Rossini and Chopin.

A preconcert talk will be at 7 p.m. Admission is $25 and $20. Tickets are available by calling (913) 469-4445.
