Douglas County AIDS Project sponsoring Walk for Health

The 12th annual Walk for Health for the benefit of the Douglas County AIDS Project will be Saturday in Lawrence.

Lauren Yoshinobu Buskirk, a DCAP board member and co-chairman of the benefit walk, said the 5K event was an opportunity for the community to celebrate life and health as well as raise money for those grappling with HIV/AIDS.

“My brother died of AIDS, and I’ve been doing this walk since 1992,” said Buskirk, of Lawrence. “I’ve seen the value of DCAP.”

Individuals and teams are invited to collect pledges for the walk that winds through downtown Lawrence.

Walkers begin assembling 9 a.m. Saturday at the gazebo in South Park, 11th and Massachusetts streets. The walk starts at 10 a.m. Refreshments will be provided before and after the walk.

The first 200 participants who turn in a minimum of $35 pledged will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

For more information and pledge sheets, contact the DCAP office at 843-0040.

Center seeks sponsors to recognize volunteers

Headquarters Counseling Center is asking local businesses and community members to recognize the contributions the center’s volunteers make by agreeing to sponsor one of them.

Many businesses already have agreed to sponsor a Headquarters volunteer for one hour Tuesday or Wednesday. Business owners or managers will treat a volunteer to lunch or a drink while they learn more about the volunteer, what they do, the impact their volunteering has on the community and about Headquarters Counseling Center.

Headquarters also wants to invite community members to thank the volunteers and find out more about what they do.

To learn more about the event or to sponsor a volunteer, call Wendy Leedy at 841-2345.

The event coincides with National Volunteer Recognition Week, today through Saturday.

Family of deceased child has public service

The family of a rural Lawrence boy killed in a June 2001 automobile accident will have a public service Saturday in memory of their son.

Four-year-old Jack Stineman died of a head injury in the accident, which also critically injured his mother.

Jack’s parents, Jacquie and David Stineman, will have the memorial service at 9:30 a.m. at Raintree Montessori School, 4601 Clinton Parkway, where Jack had been a student.

The Stinemans are using proceeds from Jack’s memorial fund, “Remembering Jack,” for projects at the school and to help families whose children attend Raintree in times of hardship.

This year, “Jack’s Garage” will be built on the Raintree campus for students to use.
