World Online: Panorama – Kansas Relays

On Thursday April 19th, the Kansas Relays events took place under a clear, blue sky at Kansas Univerity's Memorial Stadium.

Following the construction of Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium in 1921, the first Kansas Relays were held in 1923. Under the leadership of athletic director Phog Allen and at the urging of football coach John Outland the first Kansas Relays involved over 600 athletes.

The midwest’s premiere prep track event, the high school portion of the Kansas Relays has produced impressive results since eliminating the division between large and small schools in 1958.

Women first competed in the relays in 1962 but didn’t enjoy a full slate of events until 1976. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Kansas Relays.
