Guitarist to give free workshop

Overland Park Acoustic guitarist Chris Proctor will offer a workshop at 7 p.m. Monday at Guitar Source, 11554 W. 95th St.

Proctor is a national-champion finger-style acoustic guitarist. His latest CD is “Under the Influence.”

The workshop is free. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling (913) 894-6440.

Atchison art fair seeking entries

Atchison Artists working in two- and three-dimensional art can enter the 37th Annual Riverbend Art Festival.

The festival is May 25-26 on the Atchison Mall. Deadline for registration is May 15.

Entries must be original works. Artists entering pieces for the first time must submit three slides or photos representing their work.

Writer to read his short stories

Kansas City, Mo. Short-story writer Adam Johnson will read from his book “Emporium” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Greenelease Gallery at Rockhurst University, 1100 Rockhurst Road.

His book is about futuristic characters linked by loneliness and plot twists.

Johnson, of San Francisco, is a lecturer at Stanford University. His writing has appeared in Esquire, Harper’s and Paris Review.

Johnson and his literary agent, Warren Frazier, will conduct a question-and-answer session about the publishing business from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. in room 236 in Sedgwick Hall.

The events are free and open to the public.

Guitarist, artist unite for performance

Overland Park “Woven Harmony,” a performance that mixes guitar and tapestry art, will be presented at 2 p.m. April 14 in the Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College, 12345 College Blvd.

The show is performed by classical guitarist Robert Bluestone and tapestry artist Rebecca Bluestone. As guitar music is played, a tapestry is woven on a loom.

Admission is $18 for adults and $9 for youths. Tickets are available by calling the Carlsen Center Box Office, (913) 469-4445.

Theater company to perform ‘Art’

Overland Park “Art,” the Tony Award-winning comedy about three longtime friends who allow a simple canvas to wreak havoc on their friendship, will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday in the Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College, 12345 College Blvd.

The show will be performed by the Arkansas Repertory Theater, a professional touring company. The play, written by Yasmina Reza, contains adult language.

KU dance professor named to board

Kansas University dance professor Janet Hamburg has been invited to join the advisory board of the Center for Movement Education and Research, which is based in Los Angeles.

The goal of the center is to develop programs that use academic research about the role of movement in human development.

The center’s board is made up of those recognized in the fields of dance, education, psychology and Laban movement.
