Douglas Countians ‘go to jail’ to benefit philanthropy

More than 300 Douglas County residents will be “locked up” to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Assn.

Participants will be picked up by off-duty Douglas County firefighters and taken to Pizzeria Uno Chicago Bar & Grill where they will eat “jailhouse grub,” pose for mug shots and turn in their collected “bail” money.

Funds raised through the MDA Lock-Up will assist more than 800 local children and adults with neuromuscular disease by providing a MDA Clinic at Kansas University Medical Center, assistance with the purchase and repair of wheelchairs and leg braces and an annual summer camp program for kids ages 6-21.

Police investigate rape report

A Lawrence woman reported that she was raped early Sunday in her home, a Lawrence Police spokesman said.

The suspect, who the 45-year-old woman told police she is acquainted with, entered her bedroom and raped her about 4:30 a.m., Sgt. Mike Pattrick said. The suspect is a juvenile, Pattrick said. There was no break-in at the home.

No arrest has been made, and no other information about the incident was released. Police are continuing to investigate.

Congressman spends day with KU students

Congressman Dennis Moore spent Tuesday talking with Kansas University students about Congress and career opportunities.

Moore, D-Kan., spoke to Robert Rowland’s “Communication and Leadership” class about congressional issues and internship possibilities in Moore’s four offices.

He met with KU law students during a brownbag lunch.

Topics included his experience as a district attorney and how a law degree has helped him in Congress.

He concluded the day with a presentation to Allan Cigler’s “Honors Introduction to U.S. Politics” class.
