Basic endgame strategy

The endgame begins when many of the pieces have been exchanged and few remain on the board.

In the endgame, the king, which seeks safety in the opening and middlegame, becomes more powerful and active.

Pawns are very important in the endgame, due to their power if they make it all the way across the board. If this happens, they can become any piece desired.

Endgames are subtle, especially compared with the forceful actions of the middlegame, and often require precise calculation of possiblities.
