Our Services / Our Treatment Philosophy and Process
All treatment decisions are only made after providing patients enough educational material, and discussing all options as well as benefits of the various options. Of course, medication will be used whenever it is required. In addition, other therapeutic modality is used as case may warrant. These modalities could vary from various behavior therapies, to traditional psychotherapy. Most of the therapeutic work occurs outside the office, so, “homework exercises” are assigned almost every session to enhance efficacy and efficiency of the treatment.
During your first few sessions, a complete history and evaluation is conducted. We then understand the nature of the issue, and finish diagnostic formulation with the patient’s input. Occasionally, other members of the family may be invited for facilitating the therapeutic work. Sexual orientation and alternative sexuality expressions are not mental illnesses. Therefore, no treatments are required for these expressions. When the hetero-normative cultural values are imposed on someone’s natural expression of sexuality, it is bound to be experienced as a stressor in most people.
The treatment offered is for the toll that these stressors exert on one’s mental health. The external stressors from living in society are magnified for almost all minorities, especially if one is exercising alternative sexual expressions. Though the forces of social changes are now stronger than ever, they work very slowly. The approach recognizes that while sexual expressions are natural, it is the societal stressors that cause dysfunction and not the sexual expression. We focus on your internal mental processes, as well interpersonal interactions, to improve your quality of life.
