Dave Shelton’s Soul Explosion

Bassist Dave Shelton is returning to Lawrence, and in normal Dave Shelton fashion he’s recruiting a bunch of local musicians to put together soulful night of funky covers. The event invitation reveals a small selection of performers, including Rev. Morris, Chris Leopold, Leslie Butsch, Tom Johnson, Rich Wheeler, Michael Hamm, Sam Goodell, Vincent Williams, and other surprise special guests. Spoiler alert: I may show up to sing a little something. But who knows what else will go on (not even I know). Looks like you’re going to have to stop by and groove to some feel-good music. 10 p.m. Thursday at Jazzhaus, 926 Massachusetts St., $5.

The Naked and Famous [KANSAS CITY PICK]

I don’t know about you, but I’m 100 percent about getting into live shows for free. 96.5 the Buzz presents The Naked and Famous with special guests White Sea and Strange Babes at the Kansas City Live! Block this Friday and if you’re 21+, you don’t have to drop any dollars to attend. The Naked and Famous is a synth-rock band from Auckland, New Zealand, fresh off a tour opening for Imagine Dragons. This five-piece broke out on the scene with single “Young Blood,” which debuted on the New Zealand chart at No. 1 in 2010. These guys were the first New Zealand artists in three years to make that happen. Now touting their latest, “In Rolling Waves,” with pop-y hooks, bright melodies and ’80s post-punk influences, these guys are guaranteed to get you dancing. 8 p.m. Friday in the Kansas City Power and Light District, FREE.

Carswell and Hope

If you’ve been following the Lawrence alt-rock group Carswell and Hope, you know they recently launched a campaign on Indiegogo to take a dual-band tour across Ireland, and they were successful in raising $9,500. Hailing from Ireland, frontman Nick Carswell and his wife moved to Lawrence a couple of years ago, leaving behind his former band Elective Orchestra after years of touring the country and releasing their debut album. He then met current bandmates Jason Slote (drums), Dan Hines (bass) and Austin Quick (keys) in town, and now he’s bringing the two worlds together. The four have finished compiling newly inspired pieces for their debut album, “A Hunger,” and if you head to Jackpot on Friday night, you’ll get the live renditions of their new work. 10 p.m. Friday at Jackpot, 943 Massachusetts St., $5.

Andy Frasco & The Un

Want to go to the Wakarusa Festival but you’re strapped for cash? It seems a pair of three-day tickets will be given out at this event. Regardless you should check out blues/jazz musician Andy Frasco, hailing from the San Fernando Valley in Southern California. Described as “party blues,” 24-year-old Frasco has been working the industry as a musician for three years with plenty of insider information from his days of managing and promoting bands starting when he was 16 years old. He’s booked bands like HelloGoodbye, and worked with labels and venues such as Drive Thru, Atlantic Records and The Key Club in Hollywood. He’s jammed with the likes of Leon Russell, Galactic, Jackie Greene, Gary Clark Jr, Jakob Dylan, Butch Walker, The Flobots, Deer Tick, John Mayer and more. 10 p.m. Friday at The Bottleneck, 737 New Hampshire St., FREE

Your Friend Tour Kickoff

Before Your Friend takes off for its first tour, Lawrence is lucky enough to get the first listen. Mostly confined to the area (also performed this year at SXSW in Austin), Taryn Miller will hit the road, sharing with several other cities — including leaving the states for Vancouver, Canada — her multi-layered atmospheric experimental rock music that multiple publications have raved about for some time now. Miller was signed to Domino Record this past year, and Spin magazine named Your Friend one of five best new artists in April. The full band of Your Friend opened for Real Estate at Liberty Hall on April 10, which happened to fall on Miller’s birthday, resulting in a special moment of sorts for her. This will be a send-off for an amazing tour worth showing up for. 10 p.m. Saturday at Replay Lounge, 946 Massachusetts St., $3.
