Getting chirpy about New Twitter

If you’ve been hanging out in the Twittersphere this week, you’ll already know that the community is all abuzz (a-tweet?) about Twitter’s big-time revamp, which has been rolling out to selected users since Tuesday. And by “selected users,” sadly, we don’t mean us – as of this writing, none of the World Company’s Twitter accounts have been cherry-picked for this little perk. Still, there’s a lot of info out there already about New Twitter and how it may or may not make our lives easier – a good thing because the official promo video is pretty, but doesn’t do much other than offer us a glimpse of the new interface and the general idea that New Twitter will give you relevant info for each of your interests (and, if you read between the lines, get you a date):

Wired has a good overview, which pretty much explains New Twitter as a more integrative experience than the standard stream-of-updates interface that we’ve all grown accustomed to – and then probably ditched in favor of dashboard-based tools such as HootSuite or Echofon. It also offers a whole mess of keyboard shortcuts, making the experience as a whole seem more like a desktop app than a standard Web page.

Will this update pull existing Twitter power users away from the apps they’re already accustomed to? Probably not. Will it make it easier for new users to explore and then consistently use some of the medium’s cooler functions – leading to heavier reliance on Twitter as their source for news and purchasing info? Quite possibly. It’ll be exciting to see what develops.
