Our Severe Weather Threat
The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has issued a tornado watch though 9 PM this evening for Douglas, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties. That means that the atmosphere is prime to produce severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes. You should make sure that you have your plan of action ready and monitor television, radio or your all hazard weather radio in case a warning is issued.
We will likely see several supercell thunderstorms form along a cold front that is surging through the area. The main concerns are for large hail, and damaging wind with the chance of isolated tornadoes forming with some of the larger storms.
The fact that the lowest part of the atmosphere has an abundance of moisture means that many of these storms will be low-based and easier for tornadoes to form. I would expect most of these storms to be pushing through in the 4-7 PM timeframe. These storms should be out of the area as we approach sundown, and once the cold front has passed, we won’t have the threat of severe weather for the rest of the evening.
