Man arrested after bike chase that began in downtown Lawrence

Lawrence police arrested a man over the weekend after a bicycle chase that lasted several blocks.

Officers spotted the bicyclist — a man they knew had multiple active arrest warrants — shortly after 1:40 a.m. Sunday in the 800 block of Vermont Street, Officer Shawn Gross said in an email.

After seeing the bicyclist commit a traffic infraction, officers tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the cyclist fled, Gross said. After a pursuit, Gross said officers caught the suspect in the 400 block of West Fifth Street, where they searched him and found he was carrying drug paraphernalia and a knife.

In addition to warrants for burglary, theft and probation violations in at least five other Douglas County cases, the man, 27-year-old Justin P. Coleman, of McLouth, was booked into jail on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal carrying of a weapon and interference with law enforcement, according to jail records.
