The Kansas City Royals officially will open the 2020 season on July 24 in Cleveland, the first of a 60-game sprint to the finish in the condensed Major League Baseball season.

Here’s a quick look at a few of the fun and interesting notes about the Royals’ schedule that is slated to run through Sept. 27.

• The season as a whole will open on July 23, with the New York Yankees taking on the defending champion Washington Nationals and the Los Angeles Dodgers hosting the San Francisco Giants. The other 26 teams, including the Royals, will open the following day.

• Kansas City’s home opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on July 31 against the Chicago White Sox. All games will be played without fans in the stands. However, the Royals have created a “Fanbassador” program in which up to 500 fans may purchase a plastic cutout of their likeness for $40 that will be displayed in a seat at Kauffman Stadium. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Royals Respond Fund, which supports Kansas City-area nonprofits focused on food insecurity amid the pandemic.

• Teams will play 40 games against their division opponents. The other 20 games will be interleague games, including six against a natural opponent. For the Royals, the six natural-opponent games will come against the longtime rival St. Louis Cardinals. The Royals and Cardinals are scheduled for a three-game series in St. Louis Aug. 24-26 and another three-game set in Kansas City Sept. 21-23.

• The Royals’ 14 other interleague games were scheduled with travel in mind. Kansas City will play four games against the Chicago Cubs (two in Kansas City and two in Chicago), four games against Cincinnati (two at home and two on the road), a three-game series in Milwaukee and a three-game series at home against Pittsburgh.

• The Royals will be in Minnesota for the 100th anniversary of the Negro Leagues celebration on Aug. 16. Despite missing out on a golden opportunity to honor the Negro Leagues in the same town that houses the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, don’t be surprised if the Royals do something big to honor the centennial celebration throughout the season.

• Jackie Robinson Day, usually celebrated on April 15, is scheduled for Aug. 28, the date when Martin Luther King Jr., back in 1963, led the March on Washington and also the date, in 1945, when former Brooklyn Dodgers owner Branch Rickey first talked to Robinson about his future in Major League Baseball. Robinson made his MLB debut on April 15, 1947, starting at first base and scoring the go-ahead run in a win over the Boston Braves. The Royals will play at the Chicago White Sox on Jackie Robinson Day.

• Aug. 31 is this year’s trade deadline.

• Kansas City is scheduled to close its 60-game schedule with seven consecutive home games in late September. That helps offset seven-game road trip to Cleveland and Detroit that opens the season. At the end of it all, three division winners and two wildcard teams from each league will advance to the postseason.
