Preps Notebook: Free State cross country teams shine at Olathe East Invitational

The Free State High boys cross country team medaled six runners at the Olathe East invitational last Thursday.

Five Firebirds — Blake Wohler, Jacob Loos, Ryan Whittlesey, Zach Hansen Terry and Ethan Mason — placed in the top 10 individual runners and led the Firebirds to a first-place team finish. Roman Jasso took 14th.

The Free State girls team captured a second-place finish on the strength of first-place finishes by Brylee Burns and Olivia Goeser. Greta Barnett and Cayman Barnes also placed third and fourth, respectively for the Firebirds and Isabelle Pro finished fifth.

Taylor Sharp, Alannah Lohfeld, Molly Flynn and Stella Mosier all logged top-25 finishes for the Firebirds, as well.

Seabury soccer tops Cair Paravel 8-1

The Bishop Seabury boys soccer team took down Cair Paravel 8-1 in its first league match of the year on Tuesday in Lawrence.

Junior Miles Wiseant posted a hat trick, aided by scores from seniors Enzo Karam (2), Beck Oldridge (1), Pablo Ruano (1) and junior Cole Shumaker (1).

Seahawks goalkeeper Grey Werner’s eight saves led the way for the Seabury defense, and the Seahawks picked up assists from Wiseant (1), Karam (3), Oldridge (2) and Truman Hill (1).

Bishop Seabury (2-0) hosts Olathe Heritage at 7 p.m. Friday in the inaugural game at the Seahawks’ new field.

LHS volleyball falls to Olathe South

The Lawrence High volleyball team fell to Olathe South (25-15, 25-15, 25-13) last Thursday in Olathe.

LHS soccer plays to draw

The Lawrence High soccer team moved to 2-0-1 on the season after forcing a 1-1 tie against Topeka Seaman this week at LHS.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Lions tied the match in the second half on a goal by Colin Sandefur. Garrett Ernzen picked up the assist on the goal.

The Lions will head out on the road for their next match, slated for 7 p.m. Thursday at Shawnee Mission North.

Free State girls tennis wins LHS quadrangular

The Free State girls tennis team stole the show with 12 wins at Tuesday’s LHS quadrangular, sweeping Lawrence High in the opening round, 4-0.

The Firebirds’ top singles players — Kinley VanPelt and Maya Lee — carried their momentum into the next round against Olathe South and combined to finish 6-0 on the day with wins against LHS, SM South and Olathe South.

Free State’s doubles squad of Jada Fowler and Wendo Kimori captured the team’s third set of the day in the final round against Shawnee Mission South.

Lawrence High fell to both Olathe South (3-1) and Shawnee Mission South (4-0), with No. 2 singles player Sarah Bills picking up the Lions’ lone victory. Singles player Emily Brandt and the LHS doubles teams of Abby Marsh and Fiona Binin, along with Allison Jakubauskas and Gabby Jones, all pushed SM South to the wire in that match, with Brandt losing her match in a tiebreaker and the two doubles teams falling 8-6 and 8-5.

Free State boys soccer tops Shawnee Heights

The Free State boys soccer team slipped by Shawnee Heights, 1-0, on Tuesday evening for a second consecutive win after defeating De Soto last week. Utah Hester scored the winning goal for the Firebirds, with an assist from Devon Bontrager.

The Firebirds (2-0) host its next match, set for 7 p.m. Thursday against Sunflower League foe Olathe Northwest.
