Area Football Roundup: Eudora falls to Piper on game’s final play
The Eudora High football team lost on the final play of the game Friday night at Piper, falling 26-23 to drop to 1-1 on the season.
The Cardinals knocked off Baldwin, 53-0, in the season opener last week.
On Friday night, EHS appeared headed toward a 2-0 start for much of the game. After a scoreless first quarter, the Cardinals led 9-0 at halftime and 23-20 heading into the game’s final minutes.
But Piper QB Logan Ladish hit Ethan Walker for a 50-yard score as time expired to give the Pirates the win.
Brayden Beerbower and Gage Hayden both ran hard and picked up chunk plays all night for the EHS offense. Hayden’s completions set up Beerbower’s go-ahead TD run on fourth-and-goal with just 53 seconds to play.
Junior Adrion Seals added a touchdown reception for the Cardinals and junior Kale Hammerschmidt recorded an interception for the Eudora defense.
EHS will travel to Bonner Springs High for a 7 p.m. game on Friday in Week 3.
Perry-Lecompton falls to Hiawatha
After jumping out to a 7-0 first-quarter lead behind a 9-yard touchdown pass from Gunnar Ball to Reichen Rush, the Perry-Lecompton High football team lost to Hiawatha 21-7 on Friday night.
Hiawatha scored 14 points in the second quarter to take a lead into halftime and then added another touchdown with 4:19 to play in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Rush carried 18 times for 66 yards in the loss and Ball accounted for 157 yards of total offense — 129 through the air and 28 more on the ground.
Kael Gorski led the Kaws’ receivers with six catches for 79 yards.
PLHS (1-1) opened the season with a 40-6 road win at Jefferson West. Ball ran for a touchdown, threw for two more and returned a kickoff for a TD, as well. Rush ran 24 times for 218 yards and a touchdown in his season debut.
The Kaws racked up 443 yards of total offense in that one and also got TDs from Gorski, Ty Williams and Jesse Herman.
PLHS will play host to Holton at 7 p.m. Friday.
Tonganoxie loses to Louisburg in OT
The Tonganoxie High football team gave up 16 fourth-quarter points and six more in overtime in a 34-28 loss at Louisburg on Friday night.
THS is now 0-2 on the season after a 27-6 Week 1 home loss to Basehor-Linwood.
The Chieftains will play host to Paola at 7 p.m. Friday.
Baldwin blanked by Ottawa
The Baldwin Bulldogs fell to 0-2 on the season and are still in search of their first touchdown of 2021 after a 42-0 loss to Ottawa on Friday night.
Next up, BHS will play at Topeka Hayden at 7 p.m. Friday.
