Preps notebook: Free State tennis wins at Lawrence quad
The Free State High girls tennis team took first place Tuesday at rival Lawrence High’s home quadrangular, where the Firebirds’ singles and doubles players went 11-1 against their competition.
Both FSHS doubles teams — one with Dayna Steadman and Maya Lee, and the other with Jada Fowler and Angelica Velasquez — went 3-0 in matches against Shawnee Mission South, LHS and Olathe South.
In No. 1 singles, Emma Evans went 2-1 for FSHS. The Firebirds’ No. 2 singles player, Wendo Kimori, finished 3-0.
LHS went 1-11 at the event. The Lions recently finished 12-0 at a quadrangular in Leavenworth, sweeping matches against Leavenworth, Gardner Edgerton and Shawnee Mission North.
FSHS also won another recent quadrangular with Mill Valley, Olathe East and St. James. The Firebirds went 9-3 at that event. Evans was 3-0 in No. 1 singles, and No. 2 and No. 3 singles players Kimori and Abby Chappell also picked up victories. Plus, Steadman and Lee won three matches in the No. 1 doubles slot.
FSHS volleyball opens season with a win
Free State volleyball, Class 6A’s No. 5-ranked team, held off Olathe West to open the season with a road win on Tuesday.
The Owls, looking for an upset, took the first and third sets, but the Firebirds prevailed, 21-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-14, 15-7.
Berquist 3rd at Wamego
FSHS junior Claire Berquist turned in one of the top performances at the Washburn Rural Invitational on Tuesday.
Berquist’s 7-over-par 77 left her just three strokes behind St. James Academy’s Beth Grant (74), who took first place at the Wamego Country Club.
LHS runners place at opener
Three LHS runners finished in the top 20 this past weekend in Manhattan to kick off the cross country season.
For the Lawrence boys, Jack Ryan took second place with a time of 16:23.
The LHS girls’ top runners were Natalie Kennedy (11th, 20:18) and Lucy Hardy (17th, 20:49).
LHS soccer moves to 2-0
Lawrence’s boys soccer team knocked off visiting Olathe North, 3-1, this past week to improve to 2-0 for the season.
Three LHS players scored: Levi Hinson (on a penalty kick), Cale Scott and Colin Sandefur. Alden Parker-Timms and Manu Redd provided one assist apiece, and LHS goalkeeper Colyn Heck finished with seven saves.
FSHS soccer drops opener
Free State’s boys soccer team lost to Shawnee Mission East, 2-1, in its season debut.
The Firebirds got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first half, but Shawnee Mission East took control in the second half with two goals.
Bishop Seabury cross country results
The Bishop Seabury girls cross country team had four runners in the top 40 at last week’s Bobcat Invitational in Basehor. Josie Kim (22:39.8) took 13th, Darby Harris (23:44.4) took 29th, Campbell Helling (23:56.5) took 31st and Hannah Motsinger (25:19.6) was 40th.
Sage McHenry (31:23.9, 103rd) and Ruby Newell (38:38.8, 125th) also competed for Seabury.
On the boys’ side, Hayden Slough (21:35.8) led the way with a 63rd-place finish, putting him in the top half of the field. Hugh Griggs (23:28.3, 103rd) and Sam Jackson (24:54.5, 131st) rounded out Seabury’s finishers.
