Preps Notebook: LHS soccer improves to 2-0 with 6-0 rout of Topeka High

The Lawrence High boys soccer team improved to 2-0 with a dominating, 6-0 victory over Topeka High on Tuesday night at LHS.

The Lions, who topped Manhattan 2-1 in the season opener last Friday, scored four goals in the first half on Tuesday and never looked back, adding two in the second to cruise to victory.

Junior goalkeepers Grant Glasgow and Colyn Heck teamed up to record the shutout, and the LHS offense was led by senior Mason Anderson’s hat trick.

Anderson now has four goals in two games this season.

Seniors Josh Anderson, Alec Murphy and Wheeler Battaglia-Davis also added goals for LHS in Tuesday’s victory.

The Lions will return to action tonight for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff with Washburn Rural at LHS.

Volleyball back in action

The LHS and Free State High volleyball teams opened play in the same place on Tuesday night, with the Lions going 1-1 and the Firebirds 0-2 at Topeka Seaman.

LHS topped Free State 25-17 and 25-23 in the cross-city matchup at the triangular and both teams fell to Seaman, with the Lions losing 25-9 and 25-11 and the Firebirds losing 25-19 and 25-15.

For the Lions, senior libero Hadley Bird led the way with 11 digs and senior Ozi Ajekwu recorded five blocks.

The LHS offense was led by eight kills from junior Gianna Cooper and a combined 24 assists from junior setters Brenna Schwada (14) and Maddie Freed (10).

Seniors Alexia Maune and I’yawa Brewer also added five kills apiece, while junior Emily Silvers recorded 10 digs.

The Firebirds opened the season on the heels of sophomores Aubrey Duncan, Rylee Unruh and Sawyer Thomsen receiving 2020 AVCA Phenom Watch List recognition.

In junior varsity action, LHS topped Free State 27-25 and 25-23 and lost to Seaman 25-20 and 25-19, while the Free State JV also fell to Seaman 25-16 and 25-14.

Eudora soccer rolls

The Eudora High soccer team opened the 2020 season with an 8-0 victory over Maur Hill-Mount Academy on Tuesday night at Eudora District Stadium.

The victory came on senior night for 18 Cardinals seniors — Keaton Herron, Dakota Heston, Kale Breedlove, Jack Kleinweber, Dylan Meier, Holden Andrews, Jarod Papke, Devon Moncrief, Colby Lawhorn, Isaac Lewis, Brenten Ormsby, Hayden Willems, Jace McCormick, Daniel Grosdidier, Garrett Folks, Alex Kooken, Aron Mackall and Cooper Smith.

McCormick and Herron each recorded a hat trick and Grosdidier and Lawhorn added a goal apiece to round out the EHS scoring.

The Cardinals (1-0) are scheduled to return to action at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hayden High in Topeka.
