Olathe – Fans eager for Thursday night Lawrence High football will have to wait until Friday afternoon to see the conclusion of the Lions’ Week 4 battle at Olathe East. Midway through the second quarter, officials delayed the game, which O-East led 7-0, for 30 minutes before announcing the game’s postponement until Friday at 4 p.m.

By the time of the delay, the LHS offense had managed just 52 yards of offense while progressing through just its third drive of the ballgame.

Deferring the opening kickoff, LHS opened the game with a positive stop by the defense that limited traffic from moving past the East 12-yard line. Keeping the Lions equally stale on their first drive, O-East ate up eight minutes of clock before taking a 7-0 lead capped off with a 4-yard touchdown run by Gerard Reed III with just 43 seconds left in the first quarter.

LHS, bringing its offense back out in the second quarter, made its way up to its own 49-yard line and secured a first down on an 18-yard pass hauled in by sophomore Jaxon Becker.

On the very next play, quarterback Banks Bowen kept the ball and flew up to near the O-East 25-yard line before fumbling the ball on his way to the ground and turning over possession just past the Hawks’ 20. The Hawks failed to capitalize on the turnover and punted deep after going three-and-out to back up the Lions deep at their own 6-yard line.

Leading the LHS offense back out for just their third drive of the night, Bowen opened things up for the Lions with a first-down rush up to their own 17-yard line. With 5:45 left in the second quarter, Bowen found Becker for another big catch at the 33-yard line for another first down.

Moments after Becker’s catch, officials announced a 30-minute lightning delay that resulted in the game being suspended until Friday at 4 p.m. back at the CBAC.
