The Kansas women’s golf team won its first event of the season on Tuesday, claiming the title at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational at Lawrence Country Club, and sophomore Ebba Nordstedt recorded her first-ever first-place finish.

Nordstedt shot 6-under in the tournament, including an 8-under round on Monday that tied the program record for lowest score and set a course record. Her performance led the way for the Jayhawks, who beat second- place Missouri by a 14-stroke margin.

“It was fun, my first round I had eight birdies and finished with five birdies on my last five holes,” Nordstedt said in a press release. “Eight-under always helps the team, and it’s always exciting helping the team and playing at home.”

KU managed to place all five of its golfers in the top 10, as Nordstedt was followed by junior Lyla Louderbaugh (fourth place, 3-over) and seniors Amy DeKock (seventh place, 6-over), Jillian Fatkin and Anna Wallin (tied for eighth place at 7-over).

“I’m most proud of the fact that they fought very hard for KU, and they really do appreciate all the fans and support, and this is their way of showing it and giving back to the community,” KU coach Lindsay Kuhle said in the release. “So super, super proud of the girls and their effort this week and just how they represented KU.”

The Jayhawks won the event for the second straight year, the first time they have claimed the title twice in a row since they did so in 2012 and 2013.

The next event for KU is the Big O Classic in Omaha, Nebraska, which begins on Monday, in which select Jayhawks will compete as individuals.
