Former Kansas wing Rakease Passmore has committed to Maryland, he announced on Friday afternoon.

Passmore is the fifth and final KU player from the 2024-25 season to find a new home for next year in the transfer portal, and the second to choose the Terrapins after guard David Coit. Forward Zach Clemence and wing Rylan Griffen went to Texas A&M, while another wing, AJ Storr, picked Ole Miss.

Passmore, who is originally from Palatka, Florida, spent one season with the Jayhawks. He had high hopes about competing for opportunities in his freshman year, but generally found himself as the 10th man as KU used a nine-man rotation. Passmore averaged 0.7 points and 0.6 rebounds in five minutes per game across 23 appearances and did not make a field goal between Nov. 30 and Feb. 18.

He was originally a four-star recruit out of Combine Academy in Lincolnton, North Carolina, who committed to KU shortly after the 2023 edition of Late Night in the Phog. During and after the recruitment process, the KU staff compared his skill set to that of former Jayhawk star Ochai Agbaji.

Passmore said he was undeterred by KU’s offseason additions of transfer wings Griffen and Storr — “Every time I get competition, I always go past where everybody (thinks) I will,” he said shortly after arriving on campus last June — but in the end those players occupied most of the time at the wing spot over the course of the season. Passmore’s primary opportunities on the floor came when both transfers were ineffective, such as on the road at Houston on March 3.

Ultimately, Passmore entered the portal at the end of March and took his time to find a new home. He will be coached by Buzz Williams, the first-year Maryland head coach who came over from Texas A&M earlier in the offseason.
