It was a night of firsts, seconds and plenty more as Eudora girls soccer beat Bishop Ward 9-0 on Monday in a 40-minute rout to advance to the 4-1A regional championship.

Eudora had been in a bit of a scoring slump prior to the game, but Monday’s nine-goal win was a confidence boost for the Cardinals.

“It was really refreshing to watch and replenish our mind to know we can do it,” senior Kennedy Stadalman said. “The ball is there, we just have to put it in the net and finish.”

The Cardinals got on the board quickly, as junior Kambrea Kerr scored the first three goals of the game within eight minutes, the first two being within the first four minutes. Even with the early lead, Eudora coach Darren Erpelding wasn’t satisfied with his team’s energy.

“Even when we’re up 3-0, our energy and effort was just not good,” Erpelding said. “I don’t like it when our team knows we might be better than a team. But the girls came in and did a good job of picking it up and having fun.”

Erpelding said the Cardinals are in a good spot right now as a team. They’re a team with a large group of sophomores and juniors making big contributions, but their connection as a team has helped the younger girls find success.

“We won a regional title last year, so we’re hoping to get a second one and go back-to-back,” Erpelding said. “This team, I let them do their thing. They’re quirky, they’re funny, they’re almost too laid back and relaxed. They’re a really fun group to coach because they work really hard and are coachable.”

The game included first goals for two Cardinals. Junior Faith Lorenzo scored the fourth goal of the game as the ball bounced around Bishop Ward goalkeeper Nayeli Najera. Lorenzo scored again in the 16th minute on a 25-yard kick that went through the goalkeeper’s hands. In between Lorenzo’s two goals, the Cardinals scored on a corner kick with freshman Payton Lewis getting a headed goal on junior Coco Shutt’s assist.

For Eudora’s seventh goal, senior Shyanne Hall scored the first of her career on a shot right in front of the net. This is Hall’s third year on the team, and she had been searching for a scoring opportunity this year after having played goalkeeper last season.

“I wanted it so bad, and all my teammates were like, ‘Go for it,'” Hall said. “I’ve been telling myself I was going to get it before soccer was over. I was like, ‘This better go in.'”

The Cardinals put themselves in mercy-rule territory with an eighth goal in the 23rd minute of the half on a deep kick from sophomore Kadyn Moreno. To end the game, Eudora sophomore Kylie Bourne found the net on a shot in the middle of the penalty area.

Bishop Ward rarely possessed the ball, and only once did the Cyclones possess the ball beyond midfield late in the half. Less than five minutes later, the half and game ended.

“It proves to the team and the community about how girls soccer has improved,” Stadalman said. “We’re eager to do it again and get the regional title again.”

Eudora will play in the regional championship at a to be determined date and time following the regional semifinal game between No. 4 Kansas City Christian (12-4-0) and No. 13 Chanute (2-12-1).
