Baker softball falls to No. 2 Grand View for second time in HAC championship

The Baker University softball team took its tournament run all the way to the Heart of America Conference championship game but lost 3-2 to Grand View for the second time in two days on Sunday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

One day after Grand View came from behind with a 3-2 win to knock Baker into the consolation bracket, Samantha Holbert put the Vikings on the board first with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning Sunday. Baker answered in the fifth with a single from Braxton Stainbrook that brought Kaitlynn Hodges home to tie the game.

Baker took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth with a home run from Savannah Bray, but after the Vikings swapped Addison Halstead in to pitch for Madeline Waldorf, the next three Baker batters all grounded out. Grand View’s Nevaeh Randall scored on a sacrifice fly from Gabriella Taber to tie the game up again through the seventh inning.

The Wildcats were dispatched quickly in the top of the eighth with groundouts for Stainbrook and Rachel Pederson. Bray was hit by a pitch and tagged out at second on a fielder’s choice in the next play.

The Vikings closed out the inning and the game with Taber scoring on an RBI from Kylie Merical to win 3-2 and claim the conference crown.
