Baker softball makes HAC championship game from consolation bracket

After falling to the consolation bracket of the Heart of America Conference softball tournament with a 3-2 loss to Grand View on Saturday, the Baker softball team redeemed itself a few hours later with a 5-4 win over Benedictine to reach the championship game.

In Saturday’s first game, the No. 4 Wildcats fell 3-2 to No. 2 Grand View. Grand View got the first score of the game four innings in, but both teams were held scoreless through the fifth and sixth. Baker took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning, and Grand View answered with two more runs to send the Wildcats to the consolation bracket.

In Saturday’s night game, the Wildcats were first on the board with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The lead didn’t last long with Benedictine notching four runs to start the fifth inning. But that was all the Ravens would do as Baker went on to score three more times in the sixth inning to tie it up and once more for the win in the bottom of the seventh.

The win pits Baker against Grand View again at noon Sunday in the championship game. If Baker wins, a second game will be played 30 minutes after the first game’s conclusion to determine the tournament champion.
