Haskell women squeeze past Spartanburg Methodist to win CAC cross country title

With five top 10 finishes, the Haskell Indian Nations University women edged past Spartanburg Methodist in the Continental Athletic Conference Championship 6k race on Friday

The Pioneers scored 34 and had four runners in the top 10, including Sophia Outhous in the lead with a time of 24:42.3 and Audrey Noel in third at 25:24.4. But Haskell runners scored 31 points and came in fourth through seventh starting with Tiajhae Nez (25:54.4), Nina Bitsilly (26:42.6), Merisha Long (27:42.6) and Yanibah Begay (27:57.3). Haskell’s Deanna Teller took ninth place with a time of 29:29.4. Haskell’s Newakis Goombi came in 25th of 26 with a time of 42:15.3.

Rounding out the top 10 were Florida National’s Lismar Bentancourt (second, 25:08.9) and Spartanburg’s Averi Vance (eighth, 29:18.3) and Bella Shields (10th, 30:16.4)

The top five runners earned all-conference first-team honors with the remaining top 10 earning second-team honors. Haskell’s Teller also received a Champion of Character recognition from the conference along with Florida College’s Lily Hamlett, Florida National’s Mia Betancourt and Spartanburg’s Letitia Bahongwerhe.

The Haskell women will compete as a team in the NAIA national championship on Nov. 22 in Columbia, Missouri, with Outhous, Noel, Vance and Bentancourt running as individuals.
