Baker men exit national soccer tourney after double-OT loss

The Baker men’s soccer team held No. 2 Oklahoma Wesleyan scoreless through 85 minutes during their Round of 16 match at the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship on Monday, but two overtimes later, they left Wichita and the tournament with a 2-1 loss.

Baker’s Reilly Marlow-Jones broke the deadlock in the 86th minute to lead 1-0, but the Eagles’ Nikita Pakhomov knotted the match up and sent it into overtime.

After a scoreless extra period, Oklahoma Wesleyan’s Pol Mur scored the game-winning goal just two minutes into the second overtime.

The Wildcats finished their season with a 13-8-1 record overall and 5-5-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. This trip to the Round of 16 was the first for the program since 2019. Along the way, they defeated No. 15 UC-Merced 4-0 during the tournament’s second round in the first post-season game to be held at Baker’s Hartley Field.

Oklahoma Wesleyan next will face William Carey (Miss.), which advanced 4-2 on penalty kicks against Indiana Wesleyan, in the quarterfinals at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

MidAmerica Nazarene is the only Kansas team remaining in the playoffs, and it is set to play Cumberlands (Ky.) at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
