Lawrence Country Club hosts youth golf championships

Martin was one of about 30 youth golfers competing in the Second Annual Kaw Valley Junior Golf Foundation Championships. The event was crowning champions for boys and girls in both 18-hole and 9-hole divisions. The event was still underway Thursday afternoon and results weren't immediately available.

Golfers 18 and under from Lawrence and the surrounding area were competing in championship matches at the Lawrence Country Club on Monday.

The club played host to the Second Annual Kaw Valley Junior Golf Foundation Championships. The nonprofit organization was sponsoring both boys and girls championships in the 18-hole and 9-hole divisions. Top finishers from the event included: 18-hole boys champion Cameron Packard, Lawrence with a score of 87, and runner-up Gunnar Wayenberg, Lawrence, 94; 18-hole girls champion Joellen Vogt, Eudora, 108; 9-hole boys champion AJ Kimzey, Lawrence, 42, and runner-up Packson McDaniel, Lawrence, 43; 9-hole girls champion Peyton Wright, Baldwin City, 46, and runner-up Aubrey Vasquez, Ottawa, 53.

The new foundation aims to to expose children to the game of golf through both school and after-school programs.
