Sporting KC returning to play in MLS is Back tournament

After Major League Soccer made a return from its pandemic-related shutdown last week, Sporting KC is finally getting back on the field.

Sporting KC will open play in the MLS is Back tournament with a 7 p.m. kickoff Sunday against Minnesota United in Orlando. The game is the Group D opener for both teams.

The action will be shown on ESPN and can be found on the radio on 810 AM.

Sporting KC owns a 5-3-2 advantage against Minnesota, which joined MLS in 2017. All five wins have come at Children’s Mercy Park.

The sides met three times in 2019, with an Open Cup battle followed by two late-season tilts in MLS play. Minnesota posted a 4-1 victory in the Open Cup Round of 32 last June as well as a 2-1, comeback home win in the regular season on Sept. 25.

The lone matchup at Children’s Mercy Park was decided in the 88th minute when forward Erik Hurtado scored to give Sporting a 1-0 victory.

The MLS is Back tournament, which began Wednesday, will consist of 16 straight days of group stage action through July 23. The round of 16 will be July 25-28, followed by the quarterfinals July 30 through Aug. 1, semifinals Aug. 5-6 and the tournament final on Aug. 11.

After Sunday night, Sporting KC’s next action will come Friday against Colorado.
