Jayhawks blank Wildcats in Sunflower Showdown

The game winner came just two minutes in, but the Kansas women’s soccer team added two more goals for good measure to claim a 3-0 win Friday night over in-state rival Kansas State at Rock Chalk Park.

Junior midfielder Ceri Holland’s goal at the 43:22 mark of the first half came on a backside run that caught the Wildcats (3-10-2) by surprise.

That lead held up to halftime, and Kansas added two more goals in the second half to secure bragging rights.

Senior forward Katie McClure scored both of KU’s second-half goals, and both were assisted by freshman midfielder Ebba Costow.

Friday’s victory — the seventh shutout of the season by the KU defense — pushed the Jayhawks to 11-4-1 on the season, with three games remaining on their regular season schedule.

Kansas now leads the still-young soccer version of the Sunflower Showdown 2-1. Friday marked the first time that a home team won in the series.

Next up, KU will host West Virginia at 7 p.m. Thursday.
