Free State’s Claire Berquist ties for 7th at 6A state golf; Tonganoxie’s York takes 4A crown

Free State junior Claire Berquist improved her score by nine strokes on the second day of the Class 6A state golf tournament in Emporia and finished in a tie for seventh place.

After shooting an 88 on Monday to make it to the tourney’s second day, Berquist fired a 79 on Tuesday at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.

Berquist’s 79 tied for the third best round of the day at the 6A state tournament.

Blue Valley West’s Julia Misemer won the event with back-to-back 73s and Shawnee Mission East senior Tess Roman finished second, four strokes back, after shooting 72-78.

Berquist’s final round of her junior season featured 10 pars and came into form after she opened with a double-bogey on the first hole. As she did on Monday, the FSHS junior saved her best for last, finishing with a birdie at the 15th hole and three straight pars to end her day.

The Free State single-round school-record holder shot a 40 on the front nine and a 39 on the back.

Tonganoxie junior takes 4A state title

Tonganoxie’s Hayden York fired a second-round 75 to win the Class 4A state golf tournament by four strokes on Tuesday at Salina Municipal Golf Course.

York’s stellar second round came after she shot an opening-round 87 on Monday. She finished at +22 for the tournament and +5 for her second round.

The THS junior carded two birdies (No. 10 and No. 18) and 11 pars during her championship-clinching round on Tuesday. She even double-bogeyed a pair of par-3s and still finished four shots clear of the field.

York’s individual title helped pace the Chieftains’ to a fourth-place finish in the team competition. THS combined to shoot 390 on Day 1 and 380 on Day 2.

Senior Chilali Tanner (101-96) was the next highest THS finisher, followed by junior Emma Skelley (95-105), sophomore Santiana Garcia (107-104), sophomore Abigail Clarkson (125-112) and senior Keerstin McNeely (124-121).

Eudora’s Vogt cracks top 10

Eudora High sophomore Joellen Vogt, who was in a three-way tie for the lead after Day 1 at the 4A state tournament, shot an 89 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for eighth place at +33 overall.

Vogt carded two birdies and four pars during Tuesday’s round and finished with eight pars and three birdies for the tournament.
