Free State, Lawrence girls golf teams compete in invitationals across Kansas

The Free State and Lawrence girls golf teams competed in multiple tournaments recently, the first on Wednesday in Wamego and the second in Linn Valley on Monday.

In the Rural Classic at Wamego Country Club, Free State finished sixth among 11 scoring teams with a 370. Lawrence was one of two teams at the classic that didn’t have enough golfers to have a team score.

Free State’s Claire Cummins tied for fifth in the classic by shooting a 78, and fellow Firebird Tola Jankowski finished tied for 11th with an 84.

Cami Nauholz was Lawrence’s top golfer, finishing tied for 32nd by shooting a 100. Free State’s Laurel Stancil finished one shot behind Nauholz at a 101, which put her tied for 34th in the classic.

Firebird Mallory White tied for 43rd with a 107, and Avery Lonnberg rounded out the Firebirds by shooting a 121. Lawrence’s Keira Wells placed 56th in the classic by shooting a 117.

On Monday, the Firebirds and Lions were at Deer Trace Golf Course in Linn Valley for the Falcon Invitational, where the Firebirds placed fourth out of 10 teams at 384. The Lions were one of four teams to not have enough golfers to have a team score.

Cummins shot 10 over par on Monday, which put her third in the invitational. She finished three strokes behind the invitational champion Caroline Parks from Olathe South.

Jankowski tied for 18th by shooting a 99, and Stancil shot a 101 for a tie at 23rd. White finished one stroke behind Stancil, which put her tied for 26th, and Lonnberg placed 30th with a 105.

Lawrence’s Wells tied with Stancil for 26th by shooting a 102. Fellow Lion Mila Morrison tied for 43rd at 111, and Nauholz finished one stroke behind Morrison at 112, which was tied for 45th in the invitational.

Lawrence will golf at the Shawnee Heights Invite on Thursday, while Free State is next golfing on Sept. 28 at the Hoot Hollow Tournament alongside Lawrence.

Senior Lion, both teams crack top 20 at Iowa cross country race

Lawrence cross-country competed against 28 teams and almost a thousand runners in Pella, Iowa. on Saturday for the Heartland Classic, with the boys finishing ninth and the girls finishing 20th.

Senior Oliver Schwartz led the Lawrence boys with an 18 minute, 4.70-second run that was 17th. Junior Logan Druen took 41st at 18:36.00, and senior Riley Swart ran for 58th at 18:59.60.

Seniors River Cunningham and Rohan Mulhern finished 85th and 86th, respectively, coming within a tenth of a second of each other. Senior Lawson Donly placed 107th at 19:47.00, and junior Mateo Klish took 145th at 20:22.10.

Junior Chloe Griffith took 88th at 22:58.70, and senior Hayley Swart placed 119th at 23:52.60. Sophomore Emily Unekis took 173rd at 25:35.90, and freshman Ruby Oberzan finished 176th at 25:36.60.

Senior Adelaide Chaney took 183rd at 25:43.00, and sophomore Penelope Stansberry finished 288th at 28:52.10. Junior Tessa Sanders placed 314th at 30:18.80.

Free State, Eudora compete in 37th Annual Southern Stampede in Missouri

Free State and Eudora’s cross-country teams raced in Joplin, Mo. on Saturday for the 37th Annual Southern Stampede against over 50 teams and nearly a thousand runners.

Free State’s girls took eighth as a team, while the Cardinal girls placed 21st. The Firebird boys finished 17th, while the Eudora boys ran for 20th.

Free State sophomore Taylor Hulcher led the girls with a 19:29.03 run that was 29th. Sophomore Nadia Karapuda took 57th at 20:21.99, and senior Allie Gates placed one spot behind Karapuda at 20:22.59.

Senior Grace Christline took 76th at 20:41.09, and senior Peyton Moore finished 103rd at 21:09.00. Sophomore Beau Hulcher placed 109th at 21:15.40, and sophomore Ellie Dunn took 166th at 22:12.24. Sophomore Ada Bennett ran for 199th in 22:49.37, and sophomore Eloise Frye took 211th at 22:55.34.

Sophomore Emilia Mast led the Eudora girls at 116th with a run of 21:19.47. Junior Fiona Cahill took 125th at 21:34.41, and senior Lizzie Baker placed 135th at 21:46.93. Senior Faith Lorenzo finished 144th at 21:53.81, and junior Leah Barnhart ran for 208th at 22:54.18.

Sophomore Addy Tharp took 218th at 22:59.43, and junior Gracie Broers ran for 226th at 23:16.33. Junior Lillian Mueting finished in 23:22.53 for 230th. Sophomore Emma Reed finished in 24:26.31, and junior Tatum Love ran in 25:04.25.

Free State’s boys were led by senior Isaac Horner, who took 110th at 17:42.86. Freshman Sawyer Drewry placed 115th at 17:46.66, and junior Elliot Ramsay finished 135th at 17:59.16.

Junior Moses Minor finished in 18:08.44, which was 152nd. Senior Joseph Clossen took 165th at 18:15.84, and sophomore Drake Nelson placed 175th at 18:25.55. Junior Kaspar Foat took 212th at 18:49.28.

Eudora junior Grayson Masterson took 24th at 16:24.62, and junior Paul Jacobs finished 93rd at 17:30.08. Sophomore Wyatt Johnson took 181st at 18:29.36, while junior Caleb Reber ran it in 18:33.09 for 188th. Sophomore JJ Hardwick finished in 19:11.06, and senior Will Banz finished in 19:25.58.

Baldwin girls cross-country finishes third, boys eighth at home invitational

Baldwin’s boys and girls cross-country teams hosted eight teams on Saturday for the Baldwin Invitational, taking third for the girls and eighth for the boys.

Senior Shea Griffith led the Baldwin girls with a 20:00.14 run that put her sixth individually. Senior Rachel Watkins finished 12th at 20:48.83, and senior Cheyenne Brunker placed right behind Watkins with a 20:51.52 time.

Senior Kami Moore finished in 21:52.05, which was 22nd, and senior Amelia Brewer took 25th at 22:08.52. Sophomores Britton Ediger and Rosalia Jenkins finished 31st and 32nd, respectively, with Ediger running in 23:03.88 and Jenkins finishing in 23:07.01.

On the boys side, junior Landon Whaley placed 26th at 18:50.14, which led the Bulldogs. Freshman Andrew Sutton took 42nd at 19:48.17, and junior Jaxon Trybom finished 45th at 19:53.55.

Junior Nate Cramer placed 56th at 21:00.33, and junior Lawrence Jenkins took 57th at 21:02.14. Sophomore Cole Stultz finished 65th at 23:25.81.

Tonganoxie hosts cross-country invitational

Tonganoxie hosted four teams on Saturday for a home cross-country invitational, taking first in the girls race and second in the boys.

Junior Brooke Nihart won the girls race at 23:03.30, and junior Audrianna Trumble was the runner-up at 23:45.44. Freshman Bobbi Vaughn took sixth at 24:28.76, and senior Abby Burkart placed eighth at 24:41.76.

Junior Elizabeth Howlett took 11th at 25:40.36, and junior Lillian Sanders finished 13th at 25:56.89. Senior Gabriela Garza placed 16th at 26:14.93.

Bishop Seabury’s girls cross-country team ran in the invitational and finished third. Sophomore Amelia Rozzi placed fifth at 23:59.15, and junior Corinne Gab placed ninth at 24:57.33. Senior Jane Ma took 10th at 25:34.65.

Senior Alice Pulsinelli finished 19th at 27:03.21, and sophomore Alina Wilhelm placed 20th at 27:32.75.

Tonganoxie’s boys were led by freshman runner-up Carter Welsh at 18:36.05, while junior Elijah Weatherford took seventh at 19:53.28. Senior Chamberlain Albert finished ninth at 20:10.78, and junior Kolton Hoffines placed 20th at 22:50.55. Junior Alexander Bernstrom ran for 24th at 24:59.13.
